The Ivorian Ministry of Mines, Petroleum and Energy organised a panel discussion on “Consolidating your achievements, innovation for a more efficient mining sector” on 6 February 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa, during the 30th Investing in African Mining Indaba. This edition of Indaba Mining is being held from 5 to 8 February 2024 under the theme: “Seizing the power of positive disruption: a bold new future for the African mining industry”. The panel was moderated by Christine Logbo, Executive Director of the Ivory Coast Professional Mining Group, and President of the Ivory Coast Women in Mining Network (Femmes du secteur minier de Côte d’Ivoire – FEMICI).
The Ivorian Minister of Mines, Oil and Energy, Sangafowa-Coulibaly, chaired the panel. He praised the large number of investors attending the workshop. On behalf of the government, he reassured investors that the political will shown by the President of the Republic would enable them to go as far as possible. “You are welcome in Ivory Coast”. The panel was moderated by three people, including the Director General of Mines and Geology (DGMG), Seydou Coulibaly, who presented the investment opportunities in Ivory Coast and the reforms underway.
On the subject of reforms, Seydou Coulibaly spoke of the current revision of the Mining Code. This revision will bring innovations on several aspects not taken into account in the Mining Code of 2014 in force. Among these innovations, he cited the inclusion of underground and satellite mines, the integration of local content into the regulations, the inclusion of small-scale and artisanal mining, and the inclusion of critical minerals in order to diversify gold-based mining. He added that 9 permits for critical minerals had already been granted. According to Seydou Coulibaly, Ivory Coast has embarked on a reform of its mining cadastre. The country intends to modernise its mining cadastre by dematerialising its records. Once the process is complete, all permit applicants will be able to submit their applications online. This reform will have the advantage of reducing processing times to 9 months. This is shorter than in some mining countries. As part of the diversification of resources, emphasis will be placed on mining research. In view of all this potential, he invited everyone to apply for licences in Ivory Coast.
