  • Data management is crucial from exploration to closure through exploitation

Data is the foundation of any business. In the mining sector, it plays a role from the beginning of exploration through to mine closure, rehabilitation and exploitation. Aware of the importance of data management, the project in partnership with the Department of Earth Sciences of the Ki Zerbo University, organised a public conference on Saturday 7 January 2023 in Ouagadougou. The theme of this conference was “the place of information and the geological database in exploration and mining”. The aim was to present the data management sector.

Maria Bazié/Soma, geologist and database manager of Semos.

Introducing data management to students and other participants

The conference was attended by geologists, construction professionals, students and many other participants.

The head of department Hermann Ilboudo appreciated this activity which he considers as a form of resilience in the training of students in the face of the security crisis.

According to Prof. Sita Guinko, the project was launched with the aim of creating a framework for exchanges between students and the world of entrepreneurship. The conference was moderated by Maria Bazié/Soma, geologist and database manager at Semos.

For her, the notion of data refers to a set of information on a specific subject. Data can be structured, semi-structured and unstructured. Data management is the process of transforming data into accurate and complete information. It has several components including raw data collection and entry, formatting, validation, quality assurance, quality control, database integrity and security assurance, and making the data available to end users.

The importance of data management in an organisation

The conference presenter, Soma Maria, also emphasised the usefulness and necessity of data management in an organisation. “A good data management allows a good interpretation and a good decision making” she said. Indeed, the use of data allows upstream targeting of prospects, planning of activities, execution of activities, preliminary economic evaluation, feasibility study, etc. Good data management will have the advantage of allowing not only optimal exploitation of reserves and deposits, but also effective rehabilitation of the mine site.

However, the data management sector faces many difficulties such as neglect and lack of knowledge of the sector even by some geologists.
