In addition to the 200kg of gold from the mining company SEMAFO, the transitional government of Burkina Faso has effectively requisitioned 300kg of gold produced by the mining company Bissa Gold. The requisition was preceded by an order from the Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries, Simon Pierre Boussim, signed on 14 February 2023. The terms of the order, which minesactu.info was able to consult, are the same as that of Semafo. The requisition is based on Article 16 of the Mining Code, which stipulates: “Mining or quarrying installations and extracted substances can only be requisitioned or expropriated by the state for a reason of public necessity and in return for fair and prior compensation fixed by agreement between the parties or by an arbitration court or by common law. The government will compensate the company in question for the value of the gold.
The Director General of the the National Agency for the Supervision of Artisanal and Semi-Mechanised Mining (ANEEMAS) is responsible for the execution of the ministerial order.
Bissa Gold is a mining company operated by the Russian group operated by Nordgold. The company obtained its operating licence in June 2011. In 2022, it produced 6.519 tonnes of gold worth 235 billion FCFA.
