In Chad, the National Mining and Control Company (Société Nationale d’Exploitation Minière et de Contrôle, SONEMIC) organised the Journées de Promotion du Secteur Minier (Mining Sector Promotion Days) from 26 to 28 May 2023, under the theme: “SONEMIC, first lever”.

While the opening ceremony was chaired by the President of the Transition, General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, it was the Minister of Mines and Geology, Abdelkrim Mahamat Abdelkerim, who presided over the closing ceremony.

The aim of these days was to provide a platform for the general public, national and international operators, mining experts and national and international investors to discover the potential of mining and to encourage all stakeholders to promote this sector.

A number of activities took place over the course of these days, including the organisation of conference-debates on the problems facing the sector and proposed solutions. A trade fair to promote the sector was also organised.

The conference was an opportunity for Chad to make the most of its mining potential. Recommendations were made to strengthen SONEMIC’s institutional and technical capacities so that it can coordinate the mining sector on behalf of the State, create a a one-stop desk within SONEMIC to facilitate administrative, fiscal and financial procedures for mining players, and improve transparency in the management of revenues generated by mining. The participants also recommended carrying out geological and cartographic studies to reveal Chad’s mining potential and attract public and private investors, setting up mining production infrastructures to improve the competitiveness and profitability of the Chadian mining sector, improving governance of the mining sector by involving the local community, supervising gold panning zones and corridors, presenting the environment and developing national expertise, and encouraging collaboration with universities.
