A video that went viral circulated on the web on 12 November 2022. It shows the destruction of machinery at a mining site.

Cross-checking of information has made it possible to identify the author. It is Byrnecut, a subcontracting company of Australian origin.

As a reminder, the Perkoa mine operated by Natou Mining Company experienced a flood on 18 April 2022. The mine’s first managers chose to liquidate the mine. A liquidator was appointed to do so. Byrnecut’s contract was terminated. Following the outrage that followed the broadcast of the video, the Council of Ministers of 16 November 2022 was given an oral communication by the Minister for Energy, Mines and Careers. According to the report of the Council of Ministers: “Following the destruction of vehicles at the Perkoa industrial mine, the Government sent a delegation on 13 November 2022 to the province of Sanguié, in the Centre-West region, to discuss with the mine’s managers. It emerged that 6 vehicles had been effectively destroyed in accordance with the company’s policy on the management of end-of-life vehicles, according to the mine’s managers. The Council instructed the minister in charge of the file to expedite investigations into the tax situation of these vehicles with a view to establishing responsibilities in accordance with the regulations in force”.

Pending the results of the investigations, it has emerged that Byrnecut is present on another mining site in Burkina Faso. According to the 2020 EITI-BF report, Byrnecut paid 9.524 billion FCFA in taxes in 2020, representing 17.25% of the 55.207 billion FCFA paid by subcontractors in 2020.
