Following the fire at the Sankariare market, the National Union of Traders of Burkina (SYNATCOMB) organised a press conference on Monday 30 January 2023 at the Sankariare market.
The Secretary General of this union, Donatien Nagalo, stressed that “the causes of this fire are yet to be determined by our competent authorities”. As a reminder, a fire destroyed almost half of the Sankariare market on 29 January 2023, according to the Burkina news agency, this fire was caused by illegal storage for gold mining.
Donatien Nagalo also emphasised that despite the joint efforts of the government and the various trade actors, there are still efforts to be made.
SYNATCOMB recognises that this fire has caused enormous damage to several actors in the trade. It encourages the victims and undertakes to support them. It invites the government to invest in the reorganisation of the trade sector and in economic recovery. The Secretary General of SYNATCOMB also called on his members to prioritise the general interest of the nation through citizen action.
