Cop28: An agreement for an energy transition without fossil fuels has been reached

0

After a time extension on the closing plenary session of the 28th UN Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP 28), which took place from 30 November to 12 December 2023 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, countries approved a so-called historic call for a “transition” away from fossil fuels on Wednesday 13 December 2023.

This is a first in the history of the climate. The players agree on the need for moderate use of fossil fuels. In fact, the text voted on after extra hours of negotiation in Dubai calls for a gradual phase-out of fossil fuels, the main causes of global warming.

After negotiating sessions, the Emiratis reached a new formulation calling for “a transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems, in a fair, orderly and equitable manner, accelerating action in this crucial decade, to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 in line with scientific advice”.

In addition to the call to move towards a fair energy transition, the text adopted on Wednesday 13 December 2023 approves another major advance of this COP, notably the target of tripling renewable energy production and doubling energy efficiency by 2030.

As a reminder, since COP26 in Glasgow, governments have also been called on to reduce the use of coal.
